FIIRO develops technology to commercially extract Thaumatin, a natural sweetener

The Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO), Oshodi, Lagos, said it has developed a technology that can aid in the commercial extraction and optimization of high-grade Thaumatin, a low-calorie sweetener and flavor modifier.

The Director-General of FIIRO, Gloria Elemo, made this known at the International Conference on Alternative Sweeteners which held in Lagos recently,themed: “Harnessing of the Economic Potential of Thaumatin (Thaumatococcus danielli) in Africa”.

Unilever agrees to buy GSK Indian Consumer Nutrition Business, including Horlicks

Unilever announced on Monday it has agreed to buy GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nutrition business in India, including hot malted drink Horlicks.

The deal is expected to cost Unilever €3.3bn ($3.8bn) and will be paid through shares of its Indian unit Hindustan Unilever as well as cash of no more than €639m.

The Food, Beverage & Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB) has expressed sadness over the increased rate of retrenchment of workers by employers in the sector.

The union urged the Federal Government to engage employers in the sector so as to halt the looming crisis the mass lay-offs in the sector may engender in the near future.

Lower finance charge, sales growth lifts Nestle Nigeria’s 9-months profit

Nestle Nigeria Plc reported a net profit growth of 44% in the nine months to the end of September.

The maker of Milo chocolate drink said that profit hit ₦33bn in nine months, with the growth accelerating in the third quarter, helped by an 85% drop in net finance cost to ₦1.27bn from ₦8.6bn.

Cadbury Nigeria rebounds to profit on higher sales, cost cutting

Struggling Cadbury Nigeria Plc jumped back into the black in the nine-months to the end of September, helped by rising sales and cost cutting.

The Bournvita maker reported a net income of ₦172m reversing a net loss of ₦64m from the same period a year earlier.

Sales in the 9-months to the end of September rose 11% to ₦26.9bn, with the growth accelerating in the third quarter by 16.1% to ₦9.4bn from ₦8.1bn.

CWAY struggles to meet demand as it extends line into yoghurt

CWAY Foods & Beverages Nigeria Ltd said that business can’t be better as combined installed production capacity of fruit-flavoured milk drink firms cannot meet consumer demand in the country.

PZ Cussons Nigeria posts first quarter loss as low consumer demand hurt sales

PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, on Friday announced a net loss of ₦208 million for the first quarter of 2018/19 financial year ending on 31 August.

The consumer goods company which has a diverse product line that includes electricals, personal and homecare products, dairy brands under the Nutricima business line and others said that the loss came as a result of low patronage of its products due to subdued consumer disposable income. Net revenue fell by 14.3% to ₦15.9bn from ₦18.5bn in the same period in 2017.
