SON to set new standard for plastic recycling

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has announced plans to work with stakeholders in the food and beverage industry to develop a standard that could save Nigeria N1.8tn annually in plastic importation.

The regulator said the new standards would improve production processes of plastics and ensure safety and the quality of products, adding that it would also lead to an increase of its use which would provide opportunities for employment rather than expending the nation’s hard-earned resources on importation.

FG develops five new standards for indigenous foods

The on-going development of the Standards also promotes the application of research and technology to boost the production of foods for local consumption and export.

SON lauds Guinness Nigeria on good manufacturing practices as it receives MANCAP certification

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has commended Guinness Nigeria Plc for adherence to good manufacturing practices.

The commendation came as the brewing company received certification for 24 of its products to the SON Mandatory Conformity Assessment Scheme (MANCAP) to provide assurance to consumers and guarantee compliance with the relevant standards.

Rite Foods attains ISO 9001 certification as it seeks growth

Rite Foods Limited, the Ososa, Ogun State-based food and beverage manufacturer said it has received the Quality Management System certification also known as ISO 9001:2015 from the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, the country’s representative of the International Organisation for Standardisation.

The certificate is an international standard that is given to organisations that demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

Nigeria to adopt African Standards on Sugar, Glucose

Nigeria is set to harmonize its standards with other African countries by adopting the African Standards on sugar and sugar products as well as develop Nigeria Industrial Standards for Glucose and Sucrose.

A technical committee chaired by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) met recently at its Lagos office to consider adoption of some African Standards under the aegis of African Organisation for Standardization (ARSO) and the development of other Nigeria Industrial Standards.

House of Rep orders NBC, others to print expiry dates, warnings on their products

The House of Representatives on Wednesday directed the Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) Limited, makers of Coca-Cola soft drinks, as well as other producers of carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks sold in Nigeria to as from January 2019, print expiry dates on all their products.

The bottling company was also directed to print labels on Fanta and Sprite drinks, warning that the products were harmful when consumed with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has stressed the need for Nigeria to generate her own data on Benzene level in soft drinks in order to arrive at the safe maximum level of benzoic acid or opt for alternative preservatives.

Mr. Osita Aboloma, the Director General of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), stated this at the Technical Committee meeting on water, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks held in Abuja.

NBC thanks consumers, other stakeholders as CPC report confirms Fanta, Sprite compliant with regulatory standards

The Nigerian Bottling Company (“NBC”) said it has received the report of investigation conducted by the Consumer Protection Council (“CPC”) to determine the levels of benzoic acid contained in its soft drinks.

The bottler of coca-Cola products in Nigeria said it was pleased with the CPC investigation as the laboratory analysis proved that the benzoic acid levels in its products meet permissible limits prescribed under the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) and with the International Food Safety limit set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

Suntory defends integrity of its brands – Lucozade

Suntory Beverage & Food Nigeria Limited, makers of Lucozade has guaranteed its customers that Lucozade does not contain benzoic acid as stated in a recent laboratory report by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC). The company went on to say that its products are safe and healthy for human consumption.

The beverage giant, which took control of Lucozade and Ribena brands from GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Plc (“GSK Nigeria Plc”) last year said it became necessary to clarify the contents of its drink after media reports claimed that laboratory analysis conducted by the CPC showed high levels of benzoic acid in Lucozade, above the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) which is 250mg per kg.

Health Ministry reassures Nigerians Coca-Cola products are safe, orders NBC, others to insert advisory warnings on products

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the Coca-Cola products manufactured in Nigeria were safe for consumption. This was as the ministry ordered all bottling companies in the country to insert advisory warnings on all products to safeguard the health of all citizens and consumers.

The explanation followed a stakeholders meeting summoned by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to address related issues on the recent court judgment on the case filed by Fijabi Holdings against the Nigeria Bottling Company and NAFDAC.
