Former VC wins suit against NB over wrongful use of “low sugar” claim

A High Court in Benin City, Edo State on Wednesday, instructed the Nigerian Breweries Plc (“NB”) to tender an unreserved apology to one of its customers, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, for wrongful inscription of “low sugar” on its product.

Mr Izevbigie, a professor of Biochemistry at the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), had alleged that the company inscribed misleading information, “low sugar” on the can of one of its non-alcoholic beverages, Amstel Malta.

He alleged in his suit that laboratory test result revealed that the product contained more sugar than the company claimed in the inscription on the brand.

Obaseki to push for non-punitive tax system for local companies

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said local companies looking to invest should be given more incentives to do so, including a non-punitive tax regime to encourage investments and boost the nation’s economic growth.

The Governor made the case while receiving the management team of Guinness Nigeria Plc., led by the Chairman, Babatunde Savage, who paid a courtesy visit to the governor, at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

University Don pokes holes in FG’s Fanta, Sprite safety claims

The Vice-Chancellor of the Benson Idahosa University, Edo State, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, has challenged the Federal Ministry of Health claims that Fanta and Sprite, both products of the Nigerian Bottling Company (“NBC”) are safe for human consumption.

Prof. Izevbigie, who spoke at a media parley in Benin City, said that the Health Ministry’s claims did not fully address the safety raised by the court ruling.

A Lagos high Court had instructed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to compel the NBC to insert a written warning on its products that Fanta and Sprite could not be consumed with Vitamin C.
