CPC gets new head in major agency shake-up

President Muhammadu Buhari has replaced the Director-General of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and 22 other Federal Government agencies in what appears to be a major agency shake-up.

The CPC was formerly headed by Mrs. Dupe Atoki, who earlier this week released the results of her agency’s investigation on the level of additives contained in soft drinks produced in Nigeria.

CPC calls for review of levels of additives in soft drinks

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) on Tuesday released its results of findings on the level of benzoic acid and sunset yellow found in Fanta and Sprite as well as other soft drink brands bottled in the country.

The Council said it was compelled to launch an investigation following the public outcry after a Lagos High Court ruled in the case of Fijabi Adebo and his firm Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited against the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC).

CPC opens investigation on NBC – Fanta, Sprite Court ruling

The Consumer Protection Council (“CPC”) on Thursday said it had opened an investigation on the recent court ruling regarding Fanta and Sprite, products of Nigerian Bottling Company (“NBC”).

The Director-General of CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, said it had written a letter to NBC summoning it to provide the agency detailed information about the composition and all laboratory tests of the two products – Fanta and Sprite, covering the last 10 years between 2008 and March 2017.

CPC opens probe into Nigerian Breweries’ health claims on beer consumption

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) said on Sunday it has opened an investigation into claims made by Nigerian Breweries Plc on nutritional and health benefits of beer consumption.

The government agency issued a 14-day ultimatum to the brewer to provide evidence to support the claims which the agency said was capable of luring unsuspecting consumers into unwholesome consumption of the product.
