House Panel summons soft drinks firms over high levels of additives found in drinks

An ad hoc Committee of the Federal House of Representatives has sent out summons to 91 carbonated soft drinks producers in the country to appear before it and respond to allegations of harmful additives found in some soft drinks sold in the country.

According to the directive, some of the companies invited to appear before the committee includes the Nigerian Botting Company Limited (NBC), makers of Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite soft drinks. Others are Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc; Sona Group; Guinness Nigeria Plc; Nestle Nigeria Plc; Jos International Breweries Plc; GlaxoSmithKline Nigeria Plc, and Cadbury Nigeria Plc.

Appeals Court rules against NBC over Fanta, Sprite labeling requirement

The Nigerian Bottling Company (“NBC”), bottlers of the famed Coca-Cola products in Nigeria suffered a legal setback in its bid to stop the execution of a judgement by a Lagos High Court which declared Fanta and Sprite to be poisonous soft drinks when consumed with vitamin C.

In a judgement delivered on February 15, a Lagos High Court dismissed all claims against the NBC and held that the company had not breached its duty of care to consumers and that there was no proven case of negligence against it.

Ebonyi State bans serving of Coca-Cola branded Soft drinks at State functions

The Ebonyi State Government has become the first State in Nigeria to restrict the consumption of Coca-Cola products in the state.

Concerned with the recent ruling by a Lagos State High Court against the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) on the alleged health effects of consuming Fanta and Sprite, Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Tuesday issued an order, banning the serving and consumption of Coke, Sprite and Fanta at government functions in the state.

Fijabi Adebo appeals court ruling, seeks compensatory damage from NBC

Fijabi Adebo, the man at the center of the Fanta, Sprite High Court ruling has appealed the lower court’s judgement to an appellate Court seeking unspecified damages from the Nigerian Bottling Company (“NBC”).

In the appeal filed at a Lagos Apellate Court, his counsel, Mr. Abiodun Onidare, argued that the trial judge failed to award damages and grant the reliefs sought by the petitioner, Fijabi Adebo and his firm Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited against NBC.

CPC calls for review of levels of additives in soft drinks

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) on Tuesday released its results of findings on the level of benzoic acid and sunset yellow found in Fanta and Sprite as well as other soft drink brands bottled in the country.

The Council said it was compelled to launch an investigation following the public outcry after a Lagos High Court ruled in the case of Fijabi Adebo and his firm Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited against the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC).

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the Coca-Cola products manufactured in Nigeria were safe for consumption. This was as the ministry ordered all bottling companies in the country to insert advisory warnings on all products to safeguard the health of all citizens and consumers.

The explanation followed a stakeholders meeting summoned by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to address related issues on the recent court judgment on the case filed by Fijabi Holdings against the Nigeria Bottling Company and NAFDAC.

Nigerian Medical Association, Nutritional Experts Weigh in on the NBC, NAFDAC Court Judgement

The Nigerian Medical Association (“NMA”) has urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (“NAFDAC”) and the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure the enforcement of the judgement by a Lagos High Court in Igbosere.

The NMA said that the regulatory agency failed Nigerians by declaring as fit for human consumption, drinks which in the United Kingdom were deemed poisonous when mixed with Vitamin C.

Court orders NAFDAC to compel NBC to warn consumers against drinking Fanta, Sprite with Vitamin C

A Lagos High court in Igbosere, on Monday ordered the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to compel the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (“NBC”), producers of Fanta and Sprite soft drinks to include health warnings on its label which says that the drinks cannot be taken with Vitamin C.

According to a report in The Nation Newspaper, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji made the order while delivering a judgement on a case brought before it by a Lagos businessman, Dr. Emmanuel Fijabi Adebo of Fijabi Adebo Holdings Ltd against NBC and NAFDAC.
