Aliko Dangote, Chairman, Dangote Group, says 98% of all dairy products consumed in Nigeria are imported.
“Ninety-eight per cent of all the milk and dairy products we consume in Nigeria are imported.
“This is why Dangote Group has planned to develop dairy plants, and develop homegrown milk production, to reduce importation,” he said.
Dangote Group, Nigeria’s largest company by market value, with interest in cement manufacturing, oil and gas, sugar, among others is planning to go into dairy manufacturing.
The company has confirmed plans to commence dairy farming in 2018, starting with 50,000 cows, with milk production to begin in 2019.
Dansa Foods, a unit of Dangote Industries Plc, one of Nigeria’s largest conglomerates and private employer is reported to have sacked half of its workforce amid dwindling sales, tight liquidity and high cost of production attributed to the high foreign exchange costs in the country.
