The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and Nigerian Breweries Plc on Friday reaffirmed their continued partnership leading-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The agreement which was cemented in 2018 will have two of Nigerian Breweries’ biggest brands, Star Lager Beer and Amstel Malta being official sponsors of Team Nigeria in the 2020 games.
Nigerian Breweries Plc on Monday released a statement on a pending legal case brought against it by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC). The company stated that it was defending the action filed against it and its former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr Johan A. Doyer, by the NCC. The case is pending at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to the company, the case is not new as it was instituted in October, 2017 by one Mr Paul Allen Oche, who is laying claims to the copyright supposedly contained in a book he “wrote” and which book has, as part of its title the Amstel Malta trademark which is well known as one of the brands in the company’s portfolio.
Nigerian Breweries Plc, makers of a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages has reassured consumers of its Amstel Malta that there are no fakes in the market.
The statement from the brewing company was prompted by a video purportedly in circulation on social media claiming the existence of a fake Amstel Malta in the market.
Nigerian Breweries Plc, on Monday issued a formal statement confirming Edo State High court ruling against it in the case of Prof Ernest Izevbigie vs. Nigerian Breweries Plc.
The judgment was for the company to apologise to the plaintiff for what the court described as “a trade trick” for the low sugar inscription on the label of one of the company’s brands, Amstel Malta.
The company stated it intends to appeal against the ruling.
Nigerian Breweries Plc, has said it will appeal a recent ruling by an Edo High Court in the case of Prof. Ernest Izevbigie vs Nigerian Breweries Plc. The court had ordered Nigerian Breweries to apologise to one of its customers, Mr Izevbigie, who had brought a suit against the company for allegedly wrongfully inscribing “low sugar” on one of its brands, Amstel Malta.
The former Vice Chancellor at the Benson Idahosa University and Professor of Biochemistry had claimed through lab test results that the said malt drink contained far more sugar content than the company was willing to admit and thus was misleading to the public to have the inscription “low sugar”.
A High Court in Benin City, Edo State on Wednesday, instructed the Nigerian Breweries Plc (“NB”) to tender an unreserved apology to one of its customers, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, for wrongful inscription of “low sugar” on its product.
Mr Izevbigie, a professor of Biochemistry at the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), had alleged that the company inscribed misleading information, “low sugar” on the can of one of its non-alcoholic beverages, Amstel Malta.
He alleged in his suit that laboratory test result revealed that the product contained more sugar than the company claimed in the inscription on the brand.
