A former Vice-Chancellor at the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, has filed a lawsuit against Nigerian Breweries plc at a High Court in Benin City for alleged deception.

Mr Izevbigie, a professor of Biochemistry, has accused the company of allegedly inscribing misleading information, “low sugar,” on the can of one of its non-alcoholic beverages, Amstel Malta.

Izevbigie alleged in his suit that a laboratory test result revealed that the product contained more sugar than the company claimed in the inscription on the brand.

The claimant urged the court to order the company to tender a written apology to his client as he had been injured by the alleged deception.

Mr Izevbigie asked the court to pronounce that the inscription on the product is misleading to the public.

According to him, he discovered during a routine medical examination that his blood sugar level was high, which was traced to his regular consumption of the said malt drink.

During a cross-examination by L.O. Ogiefere, counsel for the defendant, Izevbigie told the court that Amstel Malta did not merit the “low sugar” label, as proved by a clinical research.

According to him, the drink contained 10 cubes of sugar as against the 10 ½ to 10 ¼ cubes found in other malt drinks.
