The world’s largest brewing company, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) announced on Tuesday a commitment to source 100% of its electricity usage from renewable energy.
The brewer said that the initiative will reduce its operational carbon footprint by 30% and help “transform the energy industry” in some of its key markets in places like Argentina, Brazil, India, and across markets in Africa.
The company said it signed its first renewable energy deal with Mexico’s Iberdrola, which will provide the brewer 490 GWh of renewable electricity in the form of wind and solar power a year and increase the country’s energy capacity by about 5%.
The Belgian-based brewer said that it expects to source 75 – 85% of its power needs through power purchase agreements (PPAs), while the remaining 15 – 25% will come from on-site production such as solar panels.
“Climate change has profound implications for our company and for the communities where we live and work,” said AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito.
“Cutting back on fossil fuels is good for the environment and good for business, and we are committed to helping drive positive change.
“We have the opportunity to play a leading role in the battle against climate change by purchasing energy in a more sustainable way,” he said.
The brewer also remarked that it will join the RE 100 initiative where some of the world’s biggest companies have pledged to the 100% goal.
