Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB) has donated a fully built and furnished school library to Randle Avenue Primary School, in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The brewer partnered with the Rotary Club of Lagos in fully equipping the library and sanitary facility at the school.
Speaking at the commissioning of the facility, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Nicolaas Vervelde, said that over the years, NB has identified with the development aspirations of Nigeria and her people and has continuously extended its corporate Social Responsibility footprints in the areas of health, water, security and education as a development partner with government.
Vervelde who was represented by the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Mr. Kufre Ekanem said, “The commissioning of the library facility once again demonstrates our company’s commitment to improving the standards of education not only in Lagos but across Nigeria.”
He said that Nigerian Breweries intervention in the education sector in Nigeria took a more structured approach in 1994 when NB/Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund was set up with an initial capital of N100m.
“Since then, the fund has impacted over 20,000 students across Nigeria. We have constructed and furnished over 280 classrooms, 45 sanitary facilities and 40 libraries in 40 communities across the country. We have also granted scholarships to deserving students and tertiary institution,” he said.
He also said that the growth the company has experienced over the last 70 years in Nigeria had been because Lagos State was good to the company.
“We can only reciprocate the kind gesture by giving back to the state because we believe that businesses cannot succeed if it operates devoid of its environment. “
Mr. Vervelde commended the contributions of the Rotary Club of Lagos, who worked with NB on the project. He urged teachers to optimally utilize the facilities for the development of the children and mankind in general.
Mrs. A.N. Ojeogwu, Head Teacher of the Randle Avenue School commended the company for its enduring mark on the school, which she said had added to the school’s resource centre.
“It is a thing of joy to have a company like Nigerian Breweries in Lagos which adds value to various sectors of the Nigerian economy. So, on behalf of the school, parents and pupils, I commend them for their commitment to improving educational standards across Lagos state and the nation.” she said.
Mrs. Modupe Sasore, President, Rotary Club of Lagos, which collaborated with Nigerian Breweries on the project, stated that the facility is a testimony of the enormous commitment of the brewery giant to uplifting the standard of education in the country.
She thanked the Lagos State Government, officials of the State Universal Basic Education Board, staff of Randle Avenue Primary School and the project contractors for their cooperation in making the learning facility a reality.
