The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said it has arrested a man, Christopher Nnabuihe, who is involved in the production and sale of fake Peak powdered milk in Calabar metropolis.

NAFDAC Coordinator in Cross River State, Dr. Isaac Kolawole, who disclosed the arrest in a statement yesterday, said that they have received complaints of adulterated Peak milk from consumers which prompted the agency to open an investigation leading to the arrest of the suspect as he was making deliveries to stores.

Kolawole said Nabuihe, 56, who lives at 42, Cameroun Road, Calabar confessed to be refilling 440g (promotional pack) of Peak powdered milk with a cheaper brand of milk which he buys in large quantity (50kg) and repacks them.

He said the suspect buys already printed 440g packs from Ariaria Market, Aba, Abia State, from where he takes them to Calabar for refilling and then seals them with the help of Candle light.

The NAFDAC Coordinator pointed out that consumption of such an unwholesome /questionable product may result to some health problems as nobody can vouch for the content of the fake product and the Good Hygienic Practice (GHP).

He added that the agency will perform laboratory analysis on the product, warning that hard time awaits those who indulge in adulteration of NAFDAC regulated products as the agency will come down hard on them.

In a confessional statement, Nnabuihe said, “One 50kg of the milk will fill 27 pieces (two cartons and three pieces) and I sell one carton of the fake Peak milk at N6,000 and make a profit of N1,000 per carton.”

According to him, “You can only suspect it to be fake from the taste as the packaging of the fake and original appear the same.”

It was understood that the suspect, Christopher Nnabuihe, will be prosecuted at a Magistrate Court in Calabar as hearing on the case continues on October 28.
