La Casera defies court order, refuses to recall sacked workers

The La Casera Company has flaunted the courts order to recall 700 workers it sacked, one week after the National Industrial court ruled that the company should call back the sacked workers.

Mike Olanrewaju, Head of Education Department, National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The company had dismissed 700 workers on September 14th based on what it described as an invasion of its premises by “hoodlums.”

The National Industrial Court had ruled on September 17th restraining the management of La Casera from sacking the employees and ordered them to recall the workers back.

“The La Casera management had not recalled the affected workers since the court gave the order on September 17, but they are making efforts to settle issues with us,” Olanrewaju said.

He added that the Union would meet before taking any action, while it waits for the court to hear the case.

Meanwhile, the company has filed an application to counter the motion before the same court.

The application was before the management’s meeting with the Union and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Abuja, for a possible reconciliation.

Hearings for the two pending motions have been scheduled for Oct. 19th.
