New study claims presence of micro plastics in bottled water

A new study released on Thursday by Orb Media, a non-profit journalism organization working with scientists from the State University of New York in Fredonia claims that 93% of sampled global bottled water tested show ‘some sign of micro-plastic contamination’.

The study examined 259 bottles from nine countries and 11 brands produced by transnational companies including Aquafina (PepsiCo), Dasani (Coca-Cola), Evian (Danone), Nestle Pure Life and San Pellegrino (Nestle).

CWAY urges table water distributors to maintain proper hygiene

CWAY Nigeria Drinking Water Science & Technology Company Limited, has tasked its water distributors to constantly embrace proper hygiene within their premises.

The company noted that although government has set hygiene standards but operators of water depots should go above the sanitation standards set by the government.

UACN to liquidate Warm Spring Waters Nigeria Limited

United Africa Company Nigeria Plc (“UACN Plc”), a diversified conglomerate and one of Nigeria’s oldest companies announced on Thursday that it will wind up the assets of one of its subsidiary businesses, Warm Spring Waters Nigeria Limited, makers of ‘Gossy’ Table Water based in Ikogosi, Ekiti State.

The company cites weak operational performance due to problems associated with the rural location of the plant at the source of the spring water, logistical challenges, 100% reliance on company-generated power and a difficult operating environment as reasons to shut the business.

Warm Springs Waters commenced business in 2002 in Ikogosi, Ekiti State, in partnership with the Ekiti State Government and some private investors to produce premium quality spring water under the ‘Gossy’ brand.

Table water producers threaten to leave Lagos State over multiple levies

Producers of table water in Lagos State are threatening to leave the state en masse for neigbouring Ogun and Oyo states if Lagos does not take steps to harmonise its tax collection system.

“Our members are poised to relocate to Ogun and Oyo. We have 2,600 members, with each employing at least 20 workers,” Clementina Ativie, president, Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATAWAP), Lagos State chapter, said in Lagos.

Sachet water producers’ balk at illegal fees

Producers of sachet water, also known as ‘Pure water’ in Lagos State are presently embroiled with the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC) over a newly introduced collection of all water related fees by the agency.

A spokesperson for the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) in the state accused the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Ahmed Abdullahi of allegedly diverting hundreds of millions of naira paid to the state into a private account owned by ‘Expanse Resources Consulting Limited’.
