NAFDAC, NBC appeal court ruling on new Fanta-Sprite labeling requirement

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigerian Bottling Company (“NBC”) have appealed a Lagos High Court judgement which required that NBC put a health warning label on its Fanta and Sprite brands informing consumers that consuming the products with Vitamin C was poisonous.

The Director-General, NAFDAC, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, said that the agency had filed an appeal against the judgement and a motion to stay its execution.

“NAFDAC is a national regulatory authority and will react both scientifically and legally to the matter. Our lawyer has filed an appeal and a motion to stay execution of action of the judgment,” the DG stated.

Consumer Advocacy Group Mulls Class-Action Lawsuit against NBC following Court ruling

Following a judgement on Monday by a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere against the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), some consumer advocacy groups in the country are considering bringing a class-action lawsuit against the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (“NBC”) if it was determined that a violation has been committed against consumers of its beverage products – Fanta and Sprite.

Court orders NAFDAC to compel NBC to warn consumers against drinking Fanta, Sprite with Vitamin C

A Lagos High court in Igbosere, on Monday ordered the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to compel the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (“NBC”), producers of Fanta and Sprite soft drinks to include health warnings on its label which says that the drinks cannot be taken with Vitamin C.

According to a report in The Nation Newspaper, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji made the order while delivering a judgement on a case brought before it by a Lagos businessman, Dr. Emmanuel Fijabi Adebo of Fijabi Adebo Holdings Ltd against NBC and NAFDAC.

FG rolls-out Economic Recovery plan, to raise VAT on Champagne, alcoholic beverages, others

The Federal Government on Tuesday unveiled its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan after consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors of the economy.

The plan includes raising the Value Added TAX (VAT) rate on luxury items from current 5% to 15%. The Government is projecting raising N350bn through the increase in VAT rate on luxury items and improvement in company’s income tax, which would commence in 2018.

NBC wins National Productivity Order of Merit Award

Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC), bottler of the famed Coca-Cola soft drinks in Nigeria has been honoured with the prestigious National Productivity Order of Merit Award (NPOM) by his Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Seven-Up Bottling Company appoints Ziad Maalouf Managing Director

Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc has appointed Mr. Ziad Maalouf as the new Managing Director of the 57 year old company.

Up until his recent appointment, he was the company’s Chief Operating Officer and had joined the company in 2008 as it’s National Sales and Distribution Manager.

Mr. Maalouf has over 20 years work experience in corporate finance, organizational leadership and strategic management, among others. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the American University of Beirut.

Nigerian Breweries commissions upgraded Ota Brewery

Nigerian Breweries Plc, on Wednesday commissioned its upgraded Ota, Ogun State brewery plant, as it seeks to consolidate its leadership position in the industry.

The well-attended ceremony witnessed the unveiling of a new PET line, a Water Treatment plant and a Waste Water Treatment plant, among twenty-one other infrastructural upgrades.

The event was graced by the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was represented by Chief Abraham Idowu Akanle.
