Labour commends Buhari for rescinding proposed tariff increase on alcohol, tobacco

The National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending the proposed tariff hike on locally produced alcohol and tobacco products.

The union said that the suspension of the initial plan by the Federal Government to increase excise tariff by more than 500% on spirits, wines and tobacco products saved over 165,000 jobs.

NUFBTE said that its special intervention and appeal to the government to suspend the implementation of the tariff increase saved the looming extinction of the affected companies and thereby safeguarded direct and indirect jobs of over 165,000 Nigerians.

The Union also lauded the president for creating an enabling environment in the sector which has brought about effective and efficient union practice and administration among the workers.

It added that with the sense of urgency and responsiveness of the president in addressing the plight of manufacturers in the sector, there has been direct and indirect promotion of collaborative strategy between the employers and unions, which has brought about relative growth in the sector.

In a statement, NUFBTE President, Lateef Oyelekan, said: “Some of the areas President Buhari’s Government has impacted positively on our union include: creating an enabling environment required for a stress free Labour/Industrial Relations practice and administration both in the public and private sectors which accounts for the relative industrial peace and harmony prevalent in all sectors of industrial relations practice and administration.
