South African wine and spirits producer Distell Group announced on Monday it had acquired a 75% stake in Cruz Vodka from Blue Sky Brand Company, a South African family owned firm with the global rights to distribute the brand.

Distell did not disclose how much it paid for the brand except to say that it is the “fastest growing luxury imported vodka in South Africa”. The firm added that premium-vodka category was one of the fastest growing spirits categories in South Africa and that it was expected to continue growing strongly.

Distell is known for its cider brands, Savanna and Hunter’s Dry as well as Amarula liqueur, among others.

Distell said that Blue Sky would hold the remaining 25% stake in Cruz Vodka and would be integrally involved in the future of the brand.

“We are excited to offer another high quality luxury product to consumers who have come to trust Distell for its exceptional products. We are certain that Cruz Vodka will continue to delight consumers,” said Wim Bührmann, Managing Director, Distell, Southern Africa.

Cruz Vodka will be marketed and distributed on Distell’s platform in South Africa and the rest of Africa.

Distell is 53% owned by South African investment firm Remgro and Capevin, and 26.4% by South African Public Investment Corp (PIC), a state owned corporation that manages the government’s Employee Pension Fund.
