Fake wine producer found guilty and fined

Fake wine producer, Julian Madu, who earlier in the week, was arraigned and pleaded guilty before a Federal High Court in Lagos, for sale and distribution of unregistered Moet and Chandon champagne has been ordered to pay the sum of N55,000.

Madu, owner of MADAK Enterprises operated a counterfeit business at 8, Offin Road, Oke-Arin, Lagos, where he bottled unregistered wines that were then sold to unsuspecting customers as Moet and Chandon.

He was arraigned before a Federal High court on January 22, where he pleaded guilty to the offenses.

The Chief Regulatory Officer of NAFDAC, Folorunsho Idowu, testified against Madu in court and said that sometime in 2015, the agency received a petition from a law firm, O. KAYODE & Co, on behalf of the brand owner, complaining of sale of fake Moet and Chandon champagne.

According to the witness, the sale of fake wine to a supermarket was traced to the accused through sales receipt submitted by the supermarket.

He said the accused was eventually nabbed and brought to the NAFDAC office through assistance from the Market Union at Oke-Arin.

The witness told the court that statement was taken from the accused where he admitted selling the products to the supermarket.

After listening to the witness, Justice Abdulazeez Anka found the accused guilty as charged.
